Project Log
When interpreting Faust's lines to designate them as either "divine" or "earthly", we decided to set guidelines as to what constituted "divinity"
and "earthliness" based on how Faust speaks of these in his own 'two souls' speech, and on Goethe's concept of Nature.
Speech defined as "Divine" is that which pertains to:
- Nature
- Divinity (especially when it is man striving for divinity)
- Spirits and Supernatural Beings
- Creativity
- Beauty
- Purity
- Higher Knowledge and Thought (beyond the thinking of humanity)
Speech defined as "Earthly" is that which pertains to:
- Sensual Desire
- Lust
- Scholastic Philosophy (i.e. Human Knowledge, below Divine Knowledge)
- -Christian Faith (i.e. Acceptance of mere mortality, and obedience to traditional religion)
- -Witchcraft
- -Cynicism
- -Anger and Rage
